Self-portraits are a great assessment tool on the first week of school. I love to read Leo, el retoño tardío before the students create their self-portraits.

If students are having a little difficulty, you might want to give them a face template. This will help them feel a little successful in their drawing attempts.
Whole Body Portrait
Students with a little more skill will be able to draw the entire body.
