FREE Halloween Hat/Crown

I like to make learning fun. Kindergarten teachers put a lot of things on crowns, but I wanted to find a UNIQUE way to use them. I have been creating phonics crowns which incorporate reading, writing, math and other concepts. Well, I still have many ideas for crowns on my To Do list. You can go HERE to see what I have so far. You will find many in English and in Spanish. For now, here's a fun and free crown for this time of year.

The Five W's

Today I want to share a fun way to teach the five W's (who, what, when, where, why).  It is so much fun and easy!

First

Sing the following lines to the tune of I Have the Whole World in My Hands.

Tengo todo el cuento en mis manos,

Tengo todo el cuento en mis manos,

Tengo todo el cuento en mis manos,

Yo sé
Quien
Hizo qué
Cuando
En donde y
Por qué

Yo sé
Quien
Hizo qué
Cuando
En donde  y
Por qué

Next

Sing the same song along with the hand motions.

1.  Use the pointer finger from one hand to make a circle in the middle of the palm of your other hand. Do this for the first three lines of the song (tengo todo el cuento en mis manos).

2.  Using ONE hand, raise one finger at a time as you mention one of the five W's (quien, hizo qué, cuando, en donde y por qué).

3. Here's a little visual that may be able to help your students.

Last

After you finish the song and the corresponding motions, raise one finger at a time as you answer one of the Five W's. This will help students recall information from a story.

That's it! It's an easy way for students to remember and answer questions about a story that they just heard or read about.
